DanceNode Interviews The Flash Brothers

21st August, 2008

Written by: Digitalchild ( dchild).

DanceNode had a chance to catch up with The Flash Brothers and talk about their latest album project on Baroque Records - Elements 03 and what they'll be up to for the rest of this year.

Thanks for taking the time to talk with DanceNode about your latest album on Baroque. 'Elements' is a unique series from Baroque where they combine an artist album and mix CD so that you're remixing every track on the album. Have you had the opportunity to remix an entire album like this before?

No, it’s the first time we've done such a project. Its quite a unique kind of album, we wanted to make it where its not a typical mixed tracks compilation, or one that’s full of special edits done by the compiling Artist (as many high quality cds are done actually) – we wanted to do it in our style totally!

When you put your wish list of tracks together, what elements are you looking for ?

Either it's in a compilation album or our radio show's on DI.fm (Da Flash) & Frisky Radio (House of flash); We choose the tracks with a sound that stood out amongst all the music we get. Usually it has to be tracks with emotion, fresh, not ones that are similar to lots of other stuff that's around, to create something interesting that represents our sound.

How did you approach the project? Did you find tracks you wanted to remix and then mix them into a set or did you select tracks you wanted to remix with the set already in mind?

Keith at Baroque Records approached us with his idea and  interest in us working on this project. We did a remix for one of Lustral's album tracks for him and he was into our music as well. So we decided to go for it and work on this album project. In February this year we got a lot of fresh promos and newly signed tunes from Keith as well as back catalogue stuff. From everything we heard we chose the tracks which we liked the most and felt we can do good work with our overall remixing. We decided to remix all the tracks to demonstrate our sound in the album and shows our variety as dance producers of different genres. After we remixed all the 10 tracks we did the final mixed set in the way it sounds the best for us.

I personally found the album to have a summer feel to it, was this something you were aiming for or did you have a different goal when starting the project?

Well the main goal was to get people listening to our current styles of electronic dance music we produce in 2008, so if for some it has a summer feel or any other idea its cool with us, as music can sound to each person different with different feel. So yes it might have Summer motives in the album, but think it can fit other times of the year as well.

I've read that your father was a big influence in your interest in electronic music, is he still listening to the same kind of music and what does he think of your sound?

Well yes our father bought vinyl disco albums when we were small kids which is Electronic of course and bought our first organs & DJ equipment. Through the years he has got to hear our music that we have done and been supportive of it along with our dear Mother as well. He likes the old school disco stuff or club/euro dance stuff still. Our sound is more fresh and underground than his music but he says its quite cool and he does know the names of some the figures that helped our career such as Paul Oakenfold & John Digweed.. so its ok!

Are there any upcoming Israeli producers or DJ's that you think we should keep an eye out for?

Yes there are. On the producer side keep an eye out for Huge A who's already released some rocking Electro singles & remixes on different labels and getting good support. Also there is Daniel Zehavi aka Countparis who produced top tunes and remixes on leading Electro House label Eyezcream Recordings. We have supported both these guys in our gigs and radio shows.

As for Israeli promising djs there is Ronaldo Robotika who's now with us in the Agnosia Records Management family in Tel aviv and playing really exciting techno and minimal stuff both as DJ and live. Another promising DJ is Tzach Naim who's a very nice fellow playing quality underground tech house & minimal tech progressive tunes. We support these guys and have got the guys to play with us few times in Tel Aviv.

What does a typical gear setup for one of your shows look like?

We usually play as a trio live act plus a dj set as well, that's the full Flash Brothers show we do worldwide. Our set up includes Korg Samplers / sequencers, 2 synthesizers, a Laptop, Mackie live mixer and modules. For the DJ set we use 2 CDJs as we do not DJ with any software. We like to remain as the classic DJ's carrying the DJ bag with the music separated on CDs. So we think its quite cool to see us in action as its not every day there are three real brothers playing together :)

A lot of DJ's are starting to produce and producers starting to DJ. As producers that started DJing second do you have any advice for those out there that want to do the same?

Yes indeed. These days there are so many new DJs and producers coming out all around the world so to make it easier and be a standout you have both produce music and have the ability to perform with it as a DJ or live artist. It takes some time to build a reputation so patience has to be considered as well, because if you want to go the high levels too quickly you can go down just as quick as well. So it needs to be done step by step and try to enjoy and learn from your experiences when going in that direction.

What is something the three of you always travel with that isn't related to your music?

BAMBA, it's a famous Israel snack that's made of peanuts and all ages from 1 to 60 enjoy it in our country. Really tasty! On our world tours it reminds us of home..

What can we expect from The Flash Brothers for the second half of 2008?

We got a few more single releases coming up "Destiny" on Coldharbour Recordings (Armada music) which is an the uplifting electro, House with punk guitars & melodic tip which has rocked all our global gigs in the past year. "Feel the music" on US dance label Curvve recordings which is different tuff clubby house tune with cool vocal sample and already getting great support while the Mohawk remix has been promo'ed and doing the work on the more melodic electro house side. Also we have new big room electro progressive house tune called "Sit down stand up" on Devilock Records which is run by our friend Christian Cambas.

We will also continue with our radio shows plus we've got a world tour planned in the next couple of months visiting places such as Russia, Brazil, UK and for the first time a very special event for our NYE show where we will perform a live act & DJ set in a special country KENYA in Africa. The event will be hosting us for the first time and a big promotion has already been going on with it there.

I tried to find if you had played in Australia before but couldn't. Have you played in Australia or have plans to tour?

We haven’t played in Australia yet although we almost did in the last 2 years but for different reasons we were always delayed and were booked in other places on the same dates. We might plan to do a tour there maybe in 2009 so looking forward to it and see you guys there if all goes well :)

Thanks again for taking the time to talk with DanceNode.
